Abominable Putridity: The anomalies of artificial origin

21/03/12  ||  lou.imm0rtal

I have been truly amazed at how Eastern Europe has taken such a strong grip with the Slam Death Metal style of this obnoxious music that I love so much. Unfortunately, the law of quality over quantity prevails in this region and situation for that matter. I must express a big issue in the community of modern death metal—too many bands rushing to release a full length record without truly taking the time to grow as a band and cultivate strong tunes. This is not only the fault of the bands themselves but the fault of the people responsible for releasing their material. I think it is the job of a record label to tread carefully and closely monitor the development of bands before making the radical decision of investing thousands to only release half-hearted efforts. I not only speak for Eastern Europe but for the global community; I urge to please take heed and thoughtfully analyze before investing. You are all truly flooding us with utter shit that hold no weight with no regard to passion except mitigating a hallow trend that has become a mockery. Anyway, let us get back to the topic at hand!

Abominable Putridity hails from the mighty motherland Russia and I can safely say that they have been doing their thing since the climatic spark of Slam Death Metal that has swept the hearts of many modern Eastern European death metal fanatics. I personally believe the record to be a bit too modern sounding for me but I can see how it is effective with the new generation of death metal blood. I do wish I was around the ages of 15 so I can truly enjoy what this band has to offer with this second record. It is truly a step to a fresher approach from their previous debut which was over the top slamming as fuck but the vocals were devastatingly monotonous. I do enjoy their first record a lot though and I totally recommended for parties with your beer chugging brethren. One of the highlights that got me anticipated for this new record was Matti Way appearance as the leading vocalist. Now, if you know about Matti Way, then you know that he is one of the originators of that filthy and disgusting guttural style of vocals that began in the early 90s with his performances on the early Disgorge efforts. I fucking love the foulness that comes out of this dude’s guts and I was very excited to hear his work on this motherland slam band. There is nothing bad that I can say about it, truly… it is classic Matti Way in all its glory and it is probably the best part of the record. I also like to point out that the record is spiced up with bad ass guest vocal appearances various underground death metal vocalist such as the titan A.J. Magana of the mighty Deprecated and ex-Defeated Sanity. The only negative is that Magana’s vocals were poorly mixed into the song but the rest are excellent.

The drum performance is catchy as hell with grooves pounding away from every direction and consistent patterns that accommodate the entire guitar structure of each song. I say that percussion is finely executed. As far as the production approach for this record, I am not too sure what was done but I feel that it is all very overtly produced and perhaps it received a ton of special treatment on the digital front of things. Overall, it is a tight performance with profound triggered tones. The drummer is obviously talented and knows exactly what he wishes to accomplish—you can clearly hear a positive growth from the previous record, “In the End of Human Existence”. The guitar approach is quite simple with a variety classically-rooted slam (Devourment inspired mostly) pounding away as Matti Way delivers his disgusting lyrical onslaught. The riff-smithing does fall a bit short with poorly attempted technical sweeps that are entirely out of place in the structure of the songs and worst shit there are hints of modern deathcore-style riffing that take away from the quality of a death metal approach.

The record is expertly mixed, that is for sure! It definitely holds to modern standards of the digital age and it is sure to please many of the newly sprouting death metal blood. It is effective because it is a fun record to listen to and it carries with it all the elements that will let it hold its own in the new arena of death metal. Russian bands like Katalepsy and Disfigurement surely bring forth a more solid approach of death metal when it comes to slam but they fall behind Abominable Putridity since they do not present what is expected by the new blood. This is a shame since I believe that the recent Katalepsy 2-song promo has the potential to crush any of their native bands entire record and that is with only 2 songs. Then again, you must consider the law of quality over quantity. Katalepsy has come a long way since their inception and have delivered surprisingly epic tunes. Abominable Putridity does well to deliver a new breed and sound of modern death metal and it will surely reign as a favorite among many who are deeply into the new era. Check it out, maybe it will make you feel young again or spin it in the background during a boozy session with the homies!
